Setting up KVK in Basohli will be game changer: Col Mahan

KATHUA, Dec 22: Col Mahan Singh (retd) DDC Chairman Kathua today said that Government’s move on transferring Shamilat Deh land measuring 121 Kanals 11 Marlas at village Plakh in Basohli for establishment of new Krishivigyan Kendra (KVK) is a potential game changer that could revitalize the entire farming pattern in the hill region leading to high yield and handsome income for farmers.
In a statement issued to media persons, the DDC Chairman said that the move will provide opportunity to the farmers of the area by creating awareness to improve produce by employing various agricultural technologies. It is pertinent to mention that Col Mahan Singh, has taken up this matter before the concerned quarters and these were his efforts that finally bore fruit as the Administrative Council approved the proposal for transferring aforesaid Shamilat Deh land in favour of SKUAST Jammu for establishment of New KrishiVigyan Kendra in lieu transfer of State land measuring 122 Kanals 18 Marlas situated in village Jhanker for Kahcharie purpose.
Col Mahan said that this will be the 11th KVK under the SKUAST in Jammu region and second such in district Kathua. He said that the new KVK in Kathua district will go a long way in changing the crop pattern in the region which currently is marred with monkey and wild animal menace.
“It will also boost up productivity by promoting hybrid crops, quality seeds, introduction of horticulture, aromatic and medicinal plants, poultry, fisheries, etc”, he said adding that the KVK is also expected to provide skill development to farmers, youth and self help groups in fields like food processing, juice and candy making besides value addition to the local products.
The KVK will also provide succour to the local farming community by facilitating marketing of local products and in the establishment of new startups and business ventures. He also informed that the extension centres will be established in Bani and Billawar towns.
