SRINAGAR, Feb 22: Hardline Hurriyat and Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) today called for a shutdown on February 27 in Valley against arrest of Professor SAR Geelani on sedition charges and alleged harassment of Kashmiri students in Delhi following a pro-Afzal Guru event in Jawaharlal Nehru University.
Addressing a press conference here, the Hardline Hurriyat faction general secretary, Shabir Ahmad Shah condemned the arrest of SAR Geelani and other JNU students. He appealed people to hold protests on Friday after congregational prayers and observe shutdown on Saturday.
Shah said that the arrest of Geelani and other JNU students is violation of right to expression and demanded their immediate release. “If Geelani and other arrested persons are not released then it would invite strong reaction from Kashmir,” the separatist leader warned.
The JKLF chairman Yasin Malik also called for a shutdown in Valley on February 27 (Saturday). “Slapping case of sedition against students and teachers of JNU and also on SAR Geelani is a glaring act of undemocratic attitude of rulers and their growing intolerance,” he said and demanded their immediate release.
