Srinagar, Nov 8: The meeting called by separatist leaders at the residence of chairman of Hurriyat Conference (G) Syed Ali Shah Geelani, today stressed for relief from the daily strikes. However, there was no immediate response from the leaders.
As the meeting was going on, a few hundred protesters assembled outside the residence of Geelani at Hyderpora and demanded that the strike should continue. However, inside, the major stakeholders like traders, transporters, hoteliers and Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industries (KCCI) demand that there should be some sort of relief to them.
Sources said that transporters said that they are sitting idle for last four months and their bank interests are mounting. They demanded that there should be some respite to them.
The hoteliers said that entire hotel industry with 65,000 rooms in Kashmir is defunct. They sought some sort of relief from daily strikes.
The exporters said that their exports have reduced from Rs 1700 crore to below Rs few hundred crores. They said that the shawl making is also defunct and wanted some relief.
The member of University Teachers said that 12th class examination for science stream is mandatory.
However, the stakeholders remained tight lipped over what transpired in a daylong meeting aimed at chalking out the future course of action vis-a-vis the ongoing unrest.
The presidents and senior members of transporters, traders, Schools Associations, Sikh body, civil society members and others who attended the daylong meet, refused to disclose what was discussed in the meeting.
All the attendees put forth their suggestions before the leadership. They discussed the ground situation including torching of schools in Valley.
A statement issued by the separatists said that a meeting of different organizations and associations convened by Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Mohammad Umar Farooq and Mohammad Yasin Malik, was held today at Hyderpora Srinagar in which stakeholders from all walks of life participated with enthusiasm and fervor.
The statement said that representatives of religio-political and social organizations, trade and transport fraternity, educationists, intellectuals, lawyers and others participated in the said meeting. They shared their opinion and suggestions on unrest.
“All the participants unanimously appreciated the leadership and authorized them with their full mandate and support to continue their programme. It was unanimously decided that the programs from leadership should be followed in letter and spirit”, the statement said.
