The Government has ordered probe to find out how the picture of Asiya Andrabi featured on the banner. However, no official was suspended so far.
As part of weeklong ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ campaign, a high-level function was organized under ICDS Project at Kokernag area of Anantnag district today and that was attended by large number of people including senior civil and police officers and students. On the occasion, a banner featuring woman personalities of the country including Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was kept for public display.
However, in a major embarassment to the Government, the banner on ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’ also featured DeM chief Asiya Andrabi along with Astronaut Kalpana Chawla, Tennis star Sania Mirza, prominent philanthropist Mother Teresa, J&K MoS Health Asiya Naqash, famous Kashmiri poetess Habba Khatoon, Pondicherry Governor Kiren Bedi, IAS officers Ruveda Salam and Deeba Farhat and veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar.
Asiya was introduced as founding leader of Dukhtaran-e-Millat in the banner which was posted and created by Child Development Project Officer ICDS Project, Breng. She is a separatist leader who has been arrested several times under Public Safety Act (PSA) for having links with various militant organizations including Lashkar-e-Toiba.
Featuring of her picture along with the leading women personalities of the State and Country is an embarassment for the State Government as by this act she has been made role model for the girls in Kashmir by the Government.
Deputy Commissioner Anantnag Mohammad Younis Malik told Excelsior that a probe has been ordered into the matter. “We have started an enquiry to find out who are behind this. We are also probing whether anyone has done mischief. Once the enquiry is complete, we will share details with you,” he said.
No official has been suspended or attached over the issue so far, the DC informed.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief spokesperson, Sunil Sethi today demanded an inquiry and suspension of officials involved in the campaign on “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” in a function at Breng- Kokernag in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
