Seminar organized on ‘Himalayan Biodiversity-Issues & Concerns’

JAMMU, Sept 25: Under national awareness campaign, the Institute of Mountain Environment (IME), Bhaderwah Campus, University of Jammu, organized a one-day regional seminar ‘Himalayan Biodiversity – Issues and Concerns’.
Dr Neeraj Sharma, Incharge Institute of Mountain Environment and Organizing Secretary of the event, apprised the audience about the profile of the Institute and explained the current research performance and new initiatives being taken for progressive growth of the Institute.
Prof Raj Kumar Rampal, HoD Environmental Sciences, JU, introduced the theme of the seminar and apprised the audience about the unique biodiversity contained in upper Bhaderwah valley.
Prof M A Malik, Rector Bhaderwah Campus, in his presidential address impressed upon the audience about the importance of biodiversity and highlighted the factors influencing its distribution, pattern and existence in spatial and temporal scales.
Col Ravi Gargotra, CO, 4 R/R, Bhaderwah impressed upon the audience to have passion for biodiversity and give their best all levels to conserve the unique elements of biodiversity contained in Himalayas. He assured the public that army would render all possible help in raising the green cover of the region.
Prof Shashi Kant, in his impressive Power Point presentation, narrated the importance of biodiversity in the Himalayas and picked up point by point, the issues the Himalayas are facing may it be the physical factors, human influence, infrastructural development, natural disasters, climate change and extreme weather phenomenon. He emphasized upon the policy makers to make use of the traditional knowledge in the conservation and preservation of biodiversity.
Prof Anil Raina discussed the factors like hunting, poaching, forest fires, etc and appealed all the stakeholders to take appropriate steps to minimize man-wildlife conflict and effectively implement the wildlife regulations on ground.
