JAMMU, Sept 25: Anil Sharma, general secretary of the All Jammu and Kashmir Panchayat Conference, who is Sarpanch from Halqa Panchayat Jandrah in block Dansal of Jammu district, returned the salary cheque and handed over to Ajit Kumar Sahu, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Jammu in a programme held at BDO office Dansal.
Anil refused to accept cheque worth Rs. 10,000 which includes arrears of last 5 months. Describing the amount of Rs 2000, for Sarpanchs as cruel joke of Government with the Sarpanchs , Anil Sharma told DC Jammu that his salary be deposited in red cross account and he will not accept it as it was the joke with Panchayat members of the State.
It is pertinent to mention here that Government had announced honorarium for Panchs and Sarpanch of the state @ Rs 1000 for Panch and Rs 2000 for a Sarapanch per month. While returning his cheque of salary, Anil told DC Jammu that they were not fighting for salary at all but in fact their organization was fighting for the empowerment of Panchayats in the State.
Taking a dig at State Government for its cruel joke with the elected Panchayat representatives by announcing a meagre amount of Rs 2000 and Rs. 1000 he said when the labours engaged under MGNREGA works are given minimum wages of Rs. 145/day then how could the Government could announce such an amount of Rs. 66 day for a Sarpanch and just Rs. 33 for a Panch of the village.
