Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Nov 24: Retired Officer’s Forum organised a seminar on “Traffic Management in Jammu” at University of Jammu. On the occasion, Mehraj Ahmed Kakroo, Transport Commissioner, was the chief guest, while Shakeel Ahmed Beig, DIG Traffic, was the guest of honour. Dr JK Sharma, president of Retired Officers Forum, presided over the function. SC Rekhi, general secretary of the forum, presented the welcome address and dwelt upon the problems being faced by the public due to ever increasing number of vehicles and mismanagement of traffic in general. He said that the traffic jams and environmental/ noise pollution has put the life out of gear and calls for urgent steps to plan and execute remedial measures taking into account requirements for at least 25 years. Mehraj Ahmed Kakroo recounted the problems and elaborated on the measures being taken to address them. The construction of fourth bridge on the river Tawi and flyovers covering crowded crossings of traffic is likely to provide relief to the commuters, he added. Shakeel Ahmed Beig referred to the challenging job of traffic control in Jammu city and shortage of staff to manage smooth traffic. The discussion with members brought out lack of training of drivers, observance of traffic rule, lack of parking sites and relocation of bus stands. At the end, Dr VK Whig, publicity secretary, presented vote of thanks. The event was sponsored by Jammu and Kashmir Bank Limited, Jammu Wing.
