Seminar on Suicide Prevention held

JAMMU, Mar 20: Range Police Jammu today held seminar on Suicide Prevention, under Civic Action Programme in view of ever increasing trend of suicidal deaths in the districts at Kacchi Chawani, here today. Large number of prominent citizens including teachers and students attended the seminar.
Shakeel Ahmed Beig, DIG Jammu-Kathua-Samba Range was the chief guest on the occasion, who while speaking said that several precious lives are lost every year due to suicides in district Jammu, adding mental disorder, domestic violence, demand for dowry; poor results of sensitive students, depression and excessive consumption of alcohol are the major factor responsible for the suicide.
He said that majority of suicides can be prevented by reducing access to the means of suicide like  pesticides, guns, medication etc and treating people with mental disorders like depression, alcoholism etc as majority of those who die by suicide have a mental disorder.
The seminar was also followed by a debate contest in which various students participated.
Citizens and faculty members of Drug De-addiction Center DPL Jammu also shared their views on the occasion.
DIG Jammu also gave away the trophies to Master Akhil Vaid, Master Sandeep Shan and Master Mandeep Singh class 11th students of Ranbir Singh Hr Secondary School Jammu who were declared Ist, 2nd and 3rd respectively for delivering best speeches on the topic.
Master Akshay Kumar, Master Sumair Uppal and Mohd Mustfaq were also given consolation prizes for delivering remarkable speeches on the topic.
DIG Jammu was accompanied by Rajnesh Pran, SP Staff Officer to DIG Jammu, Parshotam Lal Sharma, DDP Range Police Headquarters, Kulbir Handa SDPO City North Jammu and Prashant Mahajan, Chief Prosecuting Officer RPHQ Jammu.
