SRINAGAR, Apr 7: Director General of Police (DGP), K Rajendra, today said that security forces presence in the areas where it is less will be increased after yesterday’s serial attacks in Kashmir valley in which three police men were killed and an officer was injured.
The police chief told reporters on the sidelines of a security review meeting held after three police men were killed in Shopian yesterday: “We are gearing up our intelligence. We along with the other security agencies will take action and those areas where our presence is less we will increase it”.
Rajendra said that the review meeting was held to discuss the security arrangements in view of yesterday’s attacks, yatra, tourist season and re-opening of offices in Srinagar. “The yatra is taking place, tourist season is also coming and Secretariat is re-opening and now three attacks have taken place, one at Shopian, one near Pattan and one in Tral. It is why we came here to review the situation in South Kashmir first. The meeting was held with Army and district and operational SPs”, he added.
On the involvement of the police man, who fled from Minister Altaf Bukhari’s residence last month, in the attack on cops, the Police chief said: “The matter is under investigation and till the investigations are not complete we can’t relate the two incidents”, he said.
Rajendra said that 50 militants or may be more are operating in South Kashmir and security forces are taking measures for the smooth conduct of yatra and ensures there is no harm to yatris or tourists. “There is no specific intelligence input suggesting the attack on yatra but we assume that there are apprehensions and we will take security measures accordingly. Whether yatris or tourists we wish everybody returns home safely”, he added.
On recent fidayeen attack, Police chief said that they are done in desperation. “The reasons are desperation to show their presence. There are several reasons and we are examining them”, he added.
Rajendra said that the infiltration at some places has become a bit easy due to damage caused to the fence due to floods and rains. “At some places the fencing has damaged due to floods and rains. This has made infiltration a bit easy”, he added.
The Police chief said that effort of the security forces is not to allow Shopian type of incidents to happen and assured that the militants will be neutralized. “Our effort will be not to allow such incidents to happen and neutralize the militants with the cooperation of people. We will also try to bring the misguided youth to mainstream”, he added.
Earlier, during the review meeting attended by IGP Kashmir, SJM Gillani and DIG Mukesh Kumar and heads of other security agencies in South Kashmir, Rajendra laid emphasis on comprehensive plan in coordination with all agencies for dealing with the militancy. He said that militant presence in the range is a matter of concern and the forces involved in maintaining the security should focus to find out the funding channels and orbit of the militants.
Police chief told the officers that besides neutralizing the militants, security forces should deal firmly with their sympathisers, who are hazardous for the peaceful atmosphere and security of the State.
The DGP said that human inputs should be accelerated to bring the culprits to justice. He said the investigation of militancy related incidents needs to be dealt through professional policing for successful and result oriented conclusions.
Rajendra said that besides blocking the funding channels, mentors of militants should be pointed out and booked under law. “Anti-militancy operations, using human inputs and public cooperation should be conducted to find out the militants. Our priority should be to make such operations successful without obstructing the activities of common man, whose security is our top concern”, he told the meeting.
Rajendra stressed upon the officers to concentrate on summer strategy for successful Amarnath Yatra and tourist season. He said that law and order would be ensured in the State and the subversive elements would not be allowed to disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of the State.
The Police chief asked asked the participants to identify vulnerable and flash points and make necessary deployment in such areas. He also asked to conduct joint training of JKP and Central Para-Military Forces (CPMF) to deal law and order situation effectively.
