Search operation continues in Kashmir

SRINAGAR : Search operation is going on in Awantipora in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district where an encounter between militants and security forces ensued last evening.

However, reports said that militants managed to give a slip to security forces after a brief encounter under the cover of darkness.

Official sources here said with the first light, security forces resumed search operation at Haur Mohalla, a village adjacent to Dogripora in Awantipora, where militants and jawans were engaged in a brief exchange of fire last evening.

Rashitriya Rifles (RR) and Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police launched a joint operation at village Dogripora following a tip off about the presence of militants.       However, when the security forces were moving towards particular area in the village, militants hiding there opened fire. Security forces also retaliated, ensuing in an encounter.

Two people were injured in the exchange of fire. However, police said one was injured in stampede while another was hit by a broken glass.

Later, additional security forces were rushed from nearby camps to foil any militant attempt to escape from the cordoned off area.

However, this morning searches were launched in Haur Mohalla, adjacent to Dogripoa as security forces believed that militants were hiding there.

Operation was going on when the reports last came in, they said, adding so far no contact was established with militants. (AGENCIES)
