SDC wants equality at par with Valley saffron growers

KISHTWAR, Aug 26: A meeting of Saffron Development Committee (SDC) was held under the chairmanship of Ajeet Bhagat at village Pochhal, here.
In the meeting, the farmers of the area stressed upon the allocation of Rs 3.22 crores for National Saffron Mission, sanctioned by the Central Government for rejuvenating and upliftment of Saffron trade which was deteriorating day by day due to lack of recent scientific uses.
It is worth to mention here that for the last one decade, not even a single penny was spent by the Saffron department/ Agriculture Department in district, Kishtwar. The speakers urged the Government to pay the farmers on the pattern of Kashmir valley norms as the crop/product is of same importance.
The farmers urged the local district officers to initiate the measures which were highlighted by the Chief Minister and Agriculture Minister and was assured that the programme/scheme has been provided by the Central Government for flourishing of Saffron in the district.
The meeting said, but till date, it is very sad that the assurances given to the farmers in Jammu are only in papers till date and no steps have been taken by the concerned department.
Saffron growers once again urged upon the concerned authorities to curb the disparity in respect of medicines/corn cost and expenses on the rejuvenation of Saffron. In case this disparity prevails, they said they shall not save meager amount and added that they are not the beggars but want equal treatment at par with the Saffron growers of Valley.
