Srinagar, Mar 6: Commuters from multiple villages of South Kashmir’s Homeshalibug area of Kulgam district are having a tough time as the majority of roads that connect the villages to the rest of the Valley are strewn with deep ditches and potholes owing to Government’s failure to carry any repair work for last several years.
The locals from different villages including Batangoo, Havoora, Mishpoora, Redwani, Frisal, Kuggar, and Chenigam lamented the Government’s failure to carry out timely repair work on the majority of the roads have deteriorated the road surfaces and rendered them dilapidated.
“The authorities are deliberately ignoring the plight of the residents. Look at the condition of our roads; they look like swimming pools. The roads did not even last for one year here. The engineers are inefficient; they leave the road surface uneven, which cracks open after slight rainfall. This is the real issue. There is hardly any monitoring at the time of laying the surface”, Ghulam Rasool Dar, a resident said.
MLA Homeshalibug, Abdul Majeed Larmi, when contacted said that the proposed repair work was delayed because of the five-month long unrest that Kashmir witnessed last year. “I agree there has not been any work on these roads from last year as the valley was gripped by uncertainty. Like all other development works the repair work on these roads could not pick up”, he said.
He also said after normalcy returned to the valley the construction work was immediately taken up. “We have been able to complete the road from Arwani to yaripora. The project was taken up under NABARD. The construction work on the Frisal- Arwani road is underway and Sangam- Khudwani road has been put under PMGSY. The work on the other roads will be taken up next month”, he said.
