NEW DELHI : The Supreme Court today stayed till further orders the release of remaining four Rajiv Gandhi killers.
A bench headed by Chief Justice P Sathasivam also issued notices to Tamil Nadu.
The Centre had filed petition seeking to restrain Jayalalithaa Government from releasing the remaining four killers of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
The apex court has already stayed the release of three others and now none of the seven convicts in Rajiv Gandhi assassination case can be released without permission of the Supreme Court.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had announced in the State assembly the decision of State Government to release all the seven convicts from jail following commutation of death sentence of three convicts to life imprisonment by the court.
The apex court had already made it clear that no one can be released without due process of law. Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi had publicly said, “If PM cannot get justice what about the common man.”
Rajiv Gandhi was killed along with 14 security personnel on May 21, 1991 in a suicidal bomb attack by LTTE militants in Tamil Nadu.
The apex court today indicated that the petition of the Centre shall be disposed of expeditiously. (AGENCIES)
