JAMMU, Jan 22: The SC/ST Joint Action Committee (JAC) and other minority organizations today demanded the immediate arrest of the accused in the alleged gang rape of a minor girl from the Scheduled Caste (SC) community, which reportedly took place in October 2024.
Addressing a press conference in the premises of Gurudwara Shri Guru Ravi Dass located at Bahu Fort (Jammu), representatives of SC/ST JAC and other minority organizations including Prof Sham Lal Basson (president, All J&K Dalit Chetna Manch), Mohinder Bhagat (president, All J&K Bhagat Mahasabha), Prof Kali Dass (president, All J&K Mahasha Sadar Sabha) and Mohd Latif Qureshi (Chairman, All India Backward Classes Union) alleged that the influential accused continued to blackmail the victim by circulating a video of the heinous crime, threatening her with dire consequences if she disclosed the matter.
“The victim’s family lodged an FIR at the concerned police station on January 5, 2025. However, despite over two weeks since the case was registered, no arrests have been made, leaving the accused free,” the representatives added. They criticized the inaction of the district’s civil and police administration and called for stringent legal measures under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act or the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The representatives demanded swift justice, urging the authorities to prioritize the case and ensure the safety and rehabilitation of the victim. “The accused must be booked under the relevant laws and put behind bars without any further delay. Justice delayed is justice denied,” a representative stated firmly.
FC Satia (president, All India Backward Classes Union), Brij Mohan Mehra (State president, All India Kashyap Mahasang), Bahadur Lal (president, Saryara Sabha), Parshotam Thapa (organizing secretary, DCM), Jasarth Khan (Incharge, Rashtriya Muslim Morcha) and Ramesh Chander Saryara also spoke on the occasion.
