SC rejects telecom service providers’ petitions seeking extension of licences

NEW DELHI :  The Supreme Court today rejected several telecom service providers’ petitions, seeking automatic extension of their existing licences in various circles across the country.
Dismissing the petitions of four telecom service providers’ — Bharti Airtel, Idea, Vodafone and Reliance –, an apex court division bench headed by Justice J Chelameswar said, “I find no merit in the petition.”  The telecom companies had moved the apex court seeking extension of their licences in different circles, which are about to expire claiming that they were governed by the Telecom policy in existence at the time of grant of licences in 1995. However, the policy underwent changes in 2012 in which the provision for automatic extension was scrapped.    (AGENCIES)
