SC rejects Neelam Katara’s plea for death penalty to Vishal, Vikas Yadav

NEW DELHI, Oct 9:
The Supreme Court today dismissed the plea of Neelam Katara, mother of Nitish Katara, seeking death penalty for convicts – Vishal and Vikas Yadav – who have been sentenced to 30 years’ in jail without any remission for brutally murdering her son in February 2002.
After hearing arguments from the prosecution, Neelam and the defence, an apex court division bench, comprising Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar and Justice R Banumati, did not concur with her contentions and said the offence committed by the convicts were not heinous. On August 17, the apex court had upheld the conviction of three convicts -Vikas Yadav, Vishal Yadav, Sukhdev Pehalwan – in the 2002 Nitish Katara murder case.
The Delhi High Court had earlier dismissed a plea by Vikas Yadav, who is serving a 30-year jail term without remission in the Katara murder case, seeking extension of the parole granted to him.  Vikas Yadav, son of Uttar Pradesh politician DP Yadav, had pleaded before the court that his conduct had been good throughout his 13 years in jail.
Nitish Katara, a business executive, was a friend of Vikas Yadav’s sister. He was abducted from a marriage party in Ghaziabad on the intervening night of February 16-17, 2002, and was later killed by the Yadav brothers. (UNI)
