NEW DELHI : The Supreme Court today declined to stay the operation of its order saying that Aadhar card was not mandatory for providing essential services like gas connection.
A bench headed by Justice B S Chauhan, however, agreed to hear on October 22 the petition filed by three oil companies and social worker Aruna Roy against the judgement of the apex court.
The Supreme Court had also directed that illegal migrants should not be issued Aadhar card.
Aadhar card is mandatory for those entitled to the benefit of cash transfer scheme to those in below poverty line category.
Under the scheme, the government is transferring cash into the bank accounts of BPL categories instead of providing subsidy on LPG cylinders.
Three PSUs namely Indian oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum are seeking modifications of the Supreme Court judgement.
