Sir,
This refers to article by Dr Raja Muzaffar Bhat titled SAVE DEVIKA ( DE Sunday Magazine 5.5.2019). The author has given some historical and religious background of this holy river which like other rivers and water-bodies is in shambles. Having such a great religious importance i believe cleaning Devika river should be the top priority of the Government especially Irrigation and Flood Control Department. The Municipal Council of Udhampur should also be directed to find an alternate place to dump the municipal waste that is unloaded on the national highway in a forest area.
This waste also goes into Devika river in rainy season. The stone crushers set up inside Devika in Udhampur and Samba districts should also be closed down as soon as possible. The Government need to allocate enough budget for solid waste management and cleaning of water bodies as this is becoming a big challenge and needs to be addressed on utmost priority. NGOs and religious institutions must come forward and launch a campaign for protection of Devika river.
