JAMMU, July 31: A delegation of Sanskrit scholars, led by Mahant Rohit Shastri called on Prof J P Sharma, Vice Chancellor of SKUAST-Jammu and presented him Shreemad Bhagvat Geeta.
Mahant Rohit Shastri said that Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology is providing quality education for which the entire administration and more particularly the Vice Chancellor deserve appreciation.
Prof J P Sharma highlighted the importance of Sanskrit and astrology since the ancient times. “Jyotish emerged with the purpose of calculating time. In previous era, people used to calculate time to predict arrival of rain. The root of the Hindi word ‘Varsha’ (rain) is ‘Varsh’ (year). At that time the calculation of time was based mainly on the sun and the moon. On the basis of their movements, day-night, fortnight, month, season, ayan, and the year were calculated. Jyotish was also used to calculate the auspicious time for performing yajnas etc,” he said, adding that if we want to know all such things then we must have to learn Sanskrit.
On the occasion, Professor M C Sharma, former Director and Vice-Chancellor, ICAR- Indian Veterinary Research Institute and Deemed University, Izatnagar; Rajeshwar Shastri, Ashok Shastri, Pandit Dev Dutt Shastri, Ajay Bharti and Vijay Shastri were also present.
