Kargil to get vaccine from Jan 18

LEH, Jan 16: A sanitation worker at Ladakh Heart Foundation was the first person to be administered COVID-19 vaccine in the Union Territory of Ladakh where Lieutenant Governor R K Mathur inaugurated the first phase of the inoculation drive this morning.
District Immunization Officer (DIO) and Media Incharge Dr Tashi Namgyal said a total of 79 healthcare workers were given first shot of Covishield vaccine against the target of 90 on Day one of vaccination drive today.

Vaccination in Kargil district of Ladakh will start on January 18.
Skalzang Chodon, a Safai Karamchari, hailing from Skidmang village of Nyoma block, took the first jab at Heart Foundation Hospital here in the presence of Lt Governor RK Mathur and Member Parliament Jamyang Tsering Namgayal shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the world’s biggest drive against Coronavirus.
The Lt Governor appreciated the medical staff, ASHA, Anganwadi and safai karamchari workers of the UT for their selfless efforts and dedication in handling the pandemic.
He hoped for the successful conduct of the vaccination drive in Ladakh.
As a priority group, the medical staff at high risk will get vaccinated in the first phase followed by others.
Mathur said, “As emphasized by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, even after getting vaccinated, one must adhere to all the safety precautions of COVID-19 and maintain complete discipline to ensure a virus free society.”
He appealed to people not to believe in rumours being spread about the Coronavirus vaccination and trust the assurances given by scientists, doctors and regulatory authorities on its safety.
Meanwhile, at least 20 healthcare personnel of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) posted in Ladakh were also among the first recipients of the Coronavirus vaccine today
A total of 20 ITBP personnel have been given the jab at the Sector hospital in Leh and this includes two women officers.
The border guarding force has a large presence in the Ladakh region by virtue of its deployment to guard the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.
Its north-west frontier, headed by an Inspector General of Police rank officer, is based in Leh and its troops are currently deployed at the front along with the Army as part of the ongoing military standoff with the Chinese PLA troops.
As reported, 4000 troops deployed along Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern Ladakh in view of prolonged standoff with China, will also get vaccine shots in the first phase for which special arrangements have been made. The Army doctors and paramedics will also get vaccine.
Ladakh has recorded 128 COVID-19 related deaths and a total virus caseload of 9,646 since the outbreak of the pandemic in March last year. As many as 9,404 patients have recovered from the infection, while the rest 114 are undergoing treatment.
Speaking on the occasion, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC) Leh Chairman-cum-CEC Tashi Gyaltson termed the moment as historic and thanked medical and healthcare workers for their dedication and hard work.
