P.A Sangma, former Speaker of Lok Sabha resigned from his party NCP suspecting disciplinary action against him if he continued with his candidature for presidential election. Obviously he must have got some assurance of support from NDA and its allies. Though NDA is also faced with divergence of opinion on the issue of presidential candidate, yet, at least, the ground is laid for a contest between Pranab Mukherjee and P.A. Sangma. Soon after his announcement of resignation from NCP, NDA seniors were activated and momentum for finalising the name of its presidential candidate increased suddenly. With Mulayam’s SP deciding to support the Congress candidate, chances for Sangma are small. BJP apparently could not make formal announcement of Sangma as its candidate because it had first to make sure that he would not buckle under the pressure of NCP. That stage is now over and the entire election scenario has changed.
