Sandhya Chhaya: Heart rending portrayal of old parents loneliness

JAMMU, Apr 18: Written in 1980’s, Jayant Dalwi’s much acclaimed play Sandhya Chhaya’s for its powerful story with contemporary social relevance and presented in superbly realistic manner, left the audience with wet eyes at the Abhinav Theatre, here today.
Staged by Theatre for Theatre, Chandigarh, as the third performance of the ongoing Theatre carnival, the story about an old couple who feel lonely as their two sons Deenu and Nandu are away from them. Deenu is in America and Nandu is in Indian Army.
The couple as Dada and Dadi befriend a little girl, over phone and chat with her to ward away their loneliness. When Nandu dies in war, Deenu, comes home to share grief of the loss with his parents. But refuses to settle back in India as according to him the country was plagued by corruption, lack of modern values etc. He returns back to America.
Heartbroken old parents decide to commit suicide, but at the very moment their deaf and dumb servant arrives with his newly born daughter. The couple feels a new surge of life as they take the newly born as their own daughter who had passed away as a child.
Play’s director Sudesh Sharma who also acted the role of Dada and Madhu Bala as Dadi gave such engrossing performances which made the audience to huff and heave with each and every punch line and emotive sequence impressively executed with perfect timing and perfection.
Jaspal Singh as deaf and dumb servant, Priya Sharma as young girl on phone and servant’s wife, Pawan Kumar as Shyam Desh Pandey and Navdeep Bajwa as Viney – all gave good performances.
Apart from the well-designed set, it was the soulful use of flute that bestowed the befitting emotional support to the climatic moments created by actors.
Tomorrow, Dashroopak Kala Sanskriti Sewa Samiti, Varanasi will stage Hindi play Andha Yug.
