JAMMU, July 20: Sopori Academy of Music and Performing Arts (SaMaPa) featured Pakhawaj recital by Pandit Ravi Shankar Upadhyay and flute recital by Pandit Chetan Joshi in its third week of ‘Digital Baithak Series.’
Pandit Chetan Joshi, a renowned Bansuri exponent, who has a unique flavour of Banaras, Gwalior and Patiala Gharana in his playing. He has developed a unique technique of playing three and a half octaves on a single flute. He presented ‘Raga Desi Todi’, also known as ‘Desi or Deskari’. The introduction to this raga was presented by Vidushi Anupam Mahajan, eminent Sitar player, Musicologist and former Dean and Head, Faculty of Music, University of Delhi.
The other recital featured by Pandit Ravi Shankar Upadhyay, a reputed musician belonging to the 400-year-old Pandit Vasudev Upadhyay Parampara (tradition) of Gaya, Bihar. He presented ‘Ganesh Stuti’ followed by Chautaal, an ancient Taal of 12 beats and concluded his recital with ‘Admiral’ which is an adaptation in Indian classical system from one of the most popular Taals of Carnatic music. The introduction to the taals was presented by Pandit Vijay Shanker Mishra, eminent Tabla Guru, Musicologist, Critic and Writer, and Vice-president of SaMaPa.
The Baithaks were compared by renowned broadcaster and anchor, Sadhna Shrivastav.
