SRINAGAR, Mar 1: Youth Provincial President of Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (NC), Salman Ali Sagar on Wednesday termed the Srinagar Smart City Project (SSCP) as “a massive urban mess”.
Addressing media persons here at the party headquarters, Nawa-e-Subha, Srinagar, Sagar said that the SSCP has increased the vulnerability of Srinagar city dwellers.
He said, “there is nothing smart about the Smart City Project. Projects which did not see the light of the day are smart parking, cleaning of water bodies, solid waste management, affordable housing, and improving basic public utility services. We only get to see the shrinking of roads in the name of the coveted project.”
He said for the Smart City Project, the entire city has been defaced, roads choked, causing regular traffic jams, partial road closures, crippling the lives of the commuters , office goers, traders and students.
“Ideally the works should have been carried out in a phased manner and by taking all the stakeholders on board,” he suggested.
He also questioned the rationale behind introducing cycle tracks in Srinagar when according to Sagar, the idea has already not fared well in the others parts of the country.
Sagar also slammed the administration for allegedly “ruining” the existing smart city infrastructure to build the new one just to welcome the G20 delegates to the Valley.
“We welcome the G2O summit, it’s a pride moment for the country but ruining existing city infrastructure for a two day spectacle is a wrong call….it is only the wastage of money,” he said.
