SRINAGAR, Feb 25: Saying that Social Welfare Department is for empowerment of physically challenged and needy people besides providing employment opportunities to women folk through various schemes and programs of Women’s Development Corporation(WDC) so  that these sections of the society can live with honour and dignity, the Minister for Social Welfare and ARI Trainings, Sakina Itoo exhorted upon officers of Social Welfare Department to work with more zeal and devotion for upliftment and betterment of needy through judicious use of funds and better implementation of various welfare schemes sponsored by State and Central Governments.
The Minister was addressing Awareness cum Distribution Camp at Banquet Hall here today, organized jointly by J&K State Rehabilitation Council, Social Welfare department and J&K Women Development Corporation.
Ms. Sakina said that the department of Social Welfare is for extending financial assistance and aid to differently abled and needy persons. She said that the empowerment of handicapped persons is essential as they too deserve to seek proper education, business and live a prosperous life with dignity.
The function was attended by Director Social Welfare Kashmir, Nisar Ahmad, Director J&K Rehabilitation Council, District Social Welfare Officer, Srinagar, Secretary J&K Women Development Corporation and other officers of Social Welfare department besides large number of beneficiaries.
On the occasion, the Minister distributed 26 motorized tricycles among specially abled persons of the Valley, costing Rs. 75,000 each.
Ms. Sakina also distributed stipend to the tune of Rs. 1.72 lakh among trainees of vocational training centres of Srinagar and Ganderbal districts, being imparting training under skill upgradation programme of J&K Women Development Corporation. Besides, Rs. 34 lakh were distributed among various beneficiaries of J&K Women Development Corporation on the occasion. The Minister also distributed Rs. 9 lakh among Self Help Groups of Srinagar and Ganderbal districts.
