Rohingyas in Jammu

P  C Sharma
Jammu at the moment is confronted with the issue of illegal settlement of foreign nationals named as Rohingyas originally belonging to Myanmar (Burma). They are said to be thrown out of Burma by the Govt when they refused to adhere to the law enacted by them not to produce more than two children to thwart population imbalance in the country in 1982. It is baffling to note as to how they have managed to arrive in Jammu from Burma covering a huge distance of more than 3750 kms travelling through Bangladesh, Kolkata, Delhi and how did they think and ultimately decide that Jammu would be the safest haven for their permanent settlement? This is indicative of a deeply sinister grand conspiracy of inimical disintegrative forces actively operating from within and across the borders.
The Jammuites are shocked, shaken and scared. They find themselves at the cross roads. There is no over ground Leadership worth its salt to lead their way as a beacon light. Some of the lukewarm political parties are trying to enter in to the fray by organising sporadic protests asking the Rohingyas to leave Jammu but till date have not been able to garner the mass support in their endeavour. The issue has also been highlighted in the Legislative Assembly by the political leaders. Questions have been asked and in their authoritative reply, the Government has admitted  illegal presence of foreign elements in the vicinity of Jammu and the border areas. This is a serious matter which may jeopardise the internal security of the State and cause population imbalance if not promptly and effectively handled. Some of the moot points relating to this burning issue can be summarised as under:
* This problem of illegal immigrants has not cropped up overnight and could not be possible without overt and covert support of some important key persons and master minds of this nefarious design.
* The people of Jammu gravely apprehend that systematic rehabilitation of these people in this sensitive area is certainly aimed at engineering a demographic change in this region.
* As per statistics, 5743 of Rohingyas families comprising 13400 members have been settled in permanent shelters in Rajiv Nagar, Qasim Nagar, Kargil Colony, Narwal, Samba and some areas close to the borders with all civic amenities such as water, electricity, madarassa etc.
* They have also been issued ration cards, adhaar cards, gas connections and have also been enrolled as voters as well.
* Vote politics being the dominant factor in the present political culture, despite there being strong undercurrent of discontent, no political party has openly come forward to take on this issue, lock stock and barrel.
* People of all communities including Muslims, must evolve their own leadership to build up a mass movement against this illegal settlement of foreign nationals in Jammu region. It should not be projected as problem of one community. It virtually relates to the entire India.
* Seminars, panel discussions, corner meetings and protests do play significant role in creating awareness but this has to be followed up by aggressive and well organised mass movement.
* BJP being a major partner in the Government from Jammu area shall have to act beyond the call of their duty of governance,  in tandem with the sentiments of the Jammuites to nip the evil in the bud.
* This is also the high time for the Union and the State Govt to take the call immediately to avert repetition of Kashmir in Jammu.
* This may be treated as a distress and a wakeup call by the entire populace of this region to organise themselves to launch a peaceful but firm blitzkrieg to drive out the illegal, criminal and anti national immigrants from the soil of Jammu failing which, we shall be slipping into abysmal sea of trials and tribulations and shall have to face the inferno of forceful mass migration from our own soil.
