Robotic Surgery is art of today’s minimal invasive surgery. It is a step ahead of laparoscopic surgery.
The credit of bringing robotic surgery to India goes to urology department of AIIMS, New Delhi, where first robotic surgery-robotic radical prostatectomy was performed in 2006. Presently robotic surgery is available in few corporate hospitals of New Delhi besides AIIMS.
Robotic surgery offers many advantages over laparoscopic surgery. Robotic instruments have seven degrees of freedom, thereby offering wide range of movements in different directions. It offers good ergonomics for surgeon, dampens tremors, if any encountered during laparoscopic surgery. It offers 3-D vision to surgeon and offers good dexterity during dissection and suturing in deep pelvic surgeries as radical prostatectomy for carcinoma prostate, radical cystectomy for urinary bladder carcinoma and so on. All these advantages of robotic surrgery lead to better surgical outcome for patient, with minimal morbidity and faster convalescence.
Robotic surgery is basically a master-slave system with surgeon commanding robot, while sitting at a distance on a console, to perform surgical manouvres as he desires. da-Vinci-S is the latest robot available costing about rupees ten crores. With the upcoming of Superspecialty hospital in GMC, Jammu and with sincere and patient-friendly efforts of our Govt., and with available surgical expertise, we can hope to have facility of robotic surgery in Superspecaility hospital, Jammu.
Besides surgical procedures, various urological procedures which can be performed by robotic surgery include robotic pyeloplasty, robotic radical prostatectomy, robotic radical cystectomy,robotic pyelolithotomy,robotic nephrectomy, robotic surgery for retrocaval ureter, robotic adrenal sparing surgery for phaeochromocytoma (the author is one of co-authors in series of this surgery, paper of which has been published in Journal of Endourology), robotic inguinal lymph node dissection, robotic vesicovaginal fistula repair.
