Road projects in Jammu, Srinagar entrusted to JMC, SMC: Govt to HC

Srinagar, Oct 28: Government has informed the High Court that all the projects of road widening having width upto 5.50 meters in Srinagar and Jammu districts have been transferred from Public Works Department to Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) and Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC).
The information has been given in shape of affidavit filed by the Principal Secretary to Government PW(R&B) department in compliance to the court direction whereby the answering department (R&B) was directed through its Commissioner Secretary to file its personal affidavit clearly indicating the progress made in the completion of the project of road widening from Dalgate to Hazratbal via Khanyar Rainawari and other areas of the City Srinagar.
Referring the Government order, the Principal Secretary submitted that as per the constitutional arrangement for local bodies vide Government order, all roads having width upto 5.50 Metres in Srinagar and Jammu have now been transferred to SMC and JMC.
Under the order 213 widening of road projects falling under the limits of JMC in Jammu district have been transferred to JMC and 364 roads falling under the limits of district Srinagar have been transferred to SMC. “Public Works (R&B) Department will continue to be the cadre controlling authority and the staff transferred to ULBs will be considered as on deputation”, reads the Government order.
Apart from this information court has been apprised that Government is also working on metrolite project for Srinagar city, sanction of which is in advance stage with the Government of India. In this connection, the matter was taken by R&B Department with Housing Department who has furnished a comprehensive movement plan (CMP) of Metrolite project for Srinagar city.
“Alignment for metrolite for Srinagar is Hazuri Bagh, Munshi Bagh, Nowpora, Khanyar, Jamia Masjid, Hawal chowk, Mill Stop, Nalbal Bridge, SKIMS, Soura, Hazratbal Crossing upto Osmanabad”, Principal Secretary submitted.
“The plan includes integrated land use & urban mobility plan, formulation of public transport system and proposed Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) Corridors, proposed city bus system plan, bus infrastructure proposal, Inland Water Transport Commuter and Goods Rail System (CGRS), Road Networks Development Plan and proposed gross sections”, reads the affidavit.
The information has been submitted in PIL whereunder the Government was directed to initiate the proceedings for road widening in different areas in Srinagar District including from Dalgate to Hazratbal Shrine.
