JAMMU, Dec 9: Rich tributes were paid today to martyr Shamsher Singh Manhas, Deputy Commandant 151 Battalion BSF, who laid down his life while fighting terrorists on December 9, 2001 in Kulgam area of Kashmir valley.
A function in this regard was held in Government Girls High School Jourian in which Daljit Singh Chib (MoS), Vice Chairman, J&K State Advisory Board for Development of Kisans, was the chief guest and Sunaina Sharma, SDM Akhnoor was the guest of honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Daljit Singh Chib described martyr Shamsher Singh Manhas as the hero of Jourian who spend his service in the militancy infested Kashmir valley and Punjab and always led the encounters from the front and won 34 gallantry awards in 35 years of his service.
Born in a farmer’s family of Manchack village of Jourian, he was very brave right from his childhood and was very good in studies also. He was awarded Police medal for distinguished services in the militancy infested area of Kashmir valley.
The Vice Chairman stressed to rename the Government Higher Secondary School, Jourian on the name of martyr Shamsher Singh Manhas. He said that he is proud that he is born in Akhnoor area which has history of producing brave soldiers who sacrificed their lives for country.
He said that efforts should be made to compile history of all martyrs of Akhnoor area and publish it in form of book to motivate and inspire young generation and infuse spirit of nationalism and love for country for which he will also extend all possible help through Government.
The students of the school presented a colourful cultural programme on the occasion. A guard of honor was presented by the 33 Battalion of BSF. The family of the martyr distributed free notebooks to the students of the school.
Principal, Government HSS Jourian, Narinderpal Singh, Headmaster, Government GHSS Jourian, Shyam Lal Shastri and Naib Tehsildar Jourian, Balbir Singh were also present.
