KATHUA, Jan 14: Rich tributes were paid to Saheed Piar Singh on his death anniversary at village Kukey Chak near Kathua today.
As per a press release, Rajiv Jasrotia, MLA Kathua, Ramesh Kumar, Deputy Commissioner Kathua and Dr. Bharat Bhushan, Chief Executive Officer,Lakhanpur Sarthal Development Authority led the gathering in paying tributes to the departed soldier.
Dr. Bharat Bhushan, Chief Executive Officer, Lakhanpur Sarthal Development Autho-rity apprised that Saheed Piar Singh attained martyrdom on January 14, 2004 at Siachin Glacier, under Operation Meghdoot. In this Operation, carried out at an altitude of 17750 feet at Siachin Glacier, Piar Singh succeeded in saving lives of his five co-soldiers but sacrificed his own life keeping in line with high traditions of Indian Army. He was awarded Sena Medal by President of India posthumously.
At the outset a column of Army from the Janglote and Basohli Morh units paid ceremonial gun- salute to the brave soldier. Wreaths were placed at the memorial on behalf of Chief of Army Staff and Commander of Janglote and Basohli Morh Army Units.
Then Rajiv Jasrotia,MLA, Kathua,Deputy Commissioner Kathua and CEO,LSDA paid floral tributes to Shaheed Piar Singh. Prominent among those who paid tributes to the brave soldier included Ex MLA Dhian Chand,Col (retd) P.L. Choudhary, president all J&K Ex Servicemen Welfare Association, Rattan Chand Krotra Retd. SP, Som Raj Majotra, BSP leader, Sardar Charanjeet Singh Bhola, Distt. President of Sikh Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, Sardar Mohinder Singh,former Vice President Municipal Council Kathua,M.L Toofan Retd. DC Excise, Prof. Dhian Singh, Prof. R.K Gupta,Cpt. Gian Singh Pathania, Ravinder Pathania, scores of decorated Ex- Services Officers, family members of Shaheed Piar Singh, Sarpanches, Panches, people of the area and a galaxy of media persons.
The Deputy Commissioner, CEO, LSDA and family members of Shaheed Piar Singh then planted saplings near the memorial of the brave soldier. The programme ended with the recital of National Anthem.
