Restrictions in Budgam

SRINAGAR, Nov 18: Authorities today imposed strict restrictions in central Kashmir’s Budgam district and foiled proposed gathering of National Conference (NC) legislator, Agha Syed Ruhullah to commerate his father’s death anniversary.
The gathering was scheduled to take place at a local Imam Bargah. However, the authorities had sealed all the roads in the Town while dozens of police and paramilitary soldiers were deployed. Police also placed Agha Ruhullah under house detention.
Agha Mehdi, a Congress leader, was killed by militants in 2000 after blowing up his vehicle with an IED at Kanihama village of the district. Besides Mehdi, four other people in the vehicle were also killed.
A top official said they were apprehending law and order problem in the Budgam town had the gathering been allowed to take the place. Sources said there were chances of clashes between the supporters of Ruhullah and Agha Syed Hassan Al-Moosvi, who heads Anjuman-e-Shar’een Shi’an, a constituent of hardline Hurriyat Conference.
Agha Hassan had recently asked his supporters not to participate in any gathering at Imam Bargah Budgam.
The situation however remained peaceful throughout the day and there was no incident of violence.
