Srinagar, Sept 10: The residents of Zoonimar and several other areas adjacent to SMC’s Achan dumping site staged a protest seeking immediate relocation of the site and taking immediate measures.
The residents said that they have been suffering for the last several years and that the Government was never ready to listen to them and take measures for setting things right.
“Everywhere in India, the garbage is dumped but that does not stink; why only here? The SMC has to use soil and treat the discharge to prevent the odor, but nothing is being done,” Firdous Ahmad, President of Social Welfare Committee, Zoonimar said.
He said that people do not need the Smart City, but rather, better health. “We want the Government to protect us and that needs to be done on priority,” he said while urging the LG to intervene.
Abdul Majeed Khan, another protestor, said that in 2006, they were told that would use the space for 26 months and after that, a new place will be identified. “But when the time ended, instead of abiding by the agreement they lodged an FIR against 213 people and the problem remained there,” he said.
He said that even the NGT took note of the matter and made a team. “The team noted everything and filed a report, but nothing happened after that; the reality is that the entire downtown is now involved in it and whenever we protest, we get arrested,” he said.
