Union Cabinet is reported to have given its nod to a scheme that will provide some facilities to physically handicapped people in the country. Many categories of handicapped persons have been taken into consideration and assistance has been recommended that are relevant to the type of handicap these people suffer from. For example, the people with impaired sight will be provided with cell phones and computers specially designed for them. Likewise with other handicapped people with impaired hearing and speaking power, some relevant facilities are contemplated. In the case of people with movement disabilities the Government will be providing financial assistance for purchase of a tricycle. However, there are some conditions and time limit for the assistance.
The point is that there is large number of handicapped people in our country although the number of handicaps on account of polio has considerably reduced. These handicapped people were not provided any support and were left either to themselves or to their close relatives who more often than not did not take proper care to make them comfortable. With the assistance provided by the Government, it will be possible for the handicapped to get some relief. But we would like to emphasize that sanctioning the relief should not be made a complicated affair which the handicapped cannot follow. It has to be simple and functional. Inordinately delaying the relief or creating a plethora of conditions would defeat the scheme and the purpose of the policy planner will be lost. That should not happen.
