Reject divisive politics, vote for development: Azad

JAMMU, Mar 26: Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Congress candidate for Udhampur-Doda Lok Sabha constituency, Ghulam Nabi Azad today called upon the electorates to reject “communal politics’’ propagated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and make the Congress victorious for carrying forward the development works.
Addressing a public meeting at Mini Stadium, Udhampur near Town Hall, Mr Azad listed achievements of UPA Government during past 10 years in which he said large scale development works were initiated all across the country including Jammu and Kashmir.
“The Congress Party has unleashed massive development across the country, for which the people would vote the party back to the power,’’ he said, adding the Congress has the history of working for the people before the independence as well as after the independence and there was no match of the party.
He also listed the development works undertaken during his about two and half years tenure as the Chief Minister from November 2005 to July 2008 and then as Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Mr Azad said Jammu and Kashmir has been granted record number of five new Medical Colleges as against just two Medical Colleges the State presently has in Jammu and Srinagar. He said he has also approved two Cancer Hospitals for the State.
“A series of measures were taken up upgrade infrastructure in the hospitals in rural areas of Jammu and Kashmir,’’ he said, adding the ongoing works would be carried forward after the general elections.
Asserting that he can’t make any fresh announcement due to Model Code of Conduct, the Union Minister said after his election, he would initiate massive era of development in the constituency and the people would see the change.
Mr Azad said that he would also play a crucial role in the upcoming Assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir for which the Congress leaders and workers should prepare themselves.
He called upon the people not to get swayed by the communal forces and strengthen the secular forces all across the country.
Several prominent Congress leaders also addressed the public meeting.
Later, Mr Azad went to Udhampur town and met old Congress men and local people. Some Congress men, who were lying low, assured the party candidate of their full support. Mr Azad called upon them to sink the differences and work for strengthening the Congress.
The Union Minister later held inter-action with legislators, leaders and workers of the party in a local hotel to devise the party strategy for the elections.
The meeting decided to shortly hold road show from Tikri to Udhampur covering Rhembal, Garhi and other towns on the National Highway.
Mr Azad stressed upon the party workers to ensure effective booth level management during the elections to ensure good turnout.
The local Congress leaders including MLA Chenani Krishen Chander Bhagat assured Mr Azad that the Congress would get massive support in the election in Udhampur district.
