Sir,
The Education Minister of J&K,Naeem Akhter’s statement that the Education Department has initiated the process of modifying and redesigning the curriculum to make learning job intensive, needs to be viewed in right perspective and welcomed and appreciated by one and all. There is no doubt that curriculum and courses of study should be designed and redesigned in such a manner that they equip the students studying at various levels with the necessary skills required for meeting the demands of job oriented market and helping them to face the challanges of fast changing life. For this purpose, the curriculla at various level needs to be updated and redesigned periodically to enhance employability of the students in the fast changing economy and market after they complete their courses. The subjects which have lost their relevance in the modern times need to be done away with and new subjects with job potential and in tune with the changing needs of the society need to be given prominent place in the curriculum at school, college and university level. So far the curriculum in English is concerned, emphasis needs to be given on the functional rather than the structural aspect of the language and students need to be equipped with skills such as writing good English and speaking English with fluency and proper stress and intonation.Efforts must be made to hone up the communication skills of students at each level.Infact, communication skills play an important role in developing the personality of an individual and help a lot in getting job for them.Last but not the least, Curriculum needs to be redesigned in such a way that it becomes mandatory for the students to spend more time in libraries and laboratories rather than indulging themselves in rote learning,in order to acquire practical skills and self learning which are so essential for leading a successful life in the modern times.
Yours etc….
