SRINAGAR, July 2: Director General of Police (DGP), K. Rajendra Kumar today convened a meeting of police officers at Police Headquarters (PHQ) to review traffic management in the Valley. He said that innovative measures need to be undertaken to streamline the traffic effectively.
Mr. Rajendra while seeking report about the measures taken to bring visible improvements in traffic management, asked the officers to ensure implementation of traffic rules and regulations strictly, for the safety of the people. He said that violation of rules by road users has been causing accidents and it is the legitimate duty of stakeholders to bring awareness about traffic rules among the masses.
DGP said that strict adherence to traffic rules on grass root level would help minimise the traffic problems including jams and road accidents.
Mr. Rajendra stressed to gear up manpower deployed in different areas to bring tangible results. He said that supervisory officers should be made accountable for visible improvements in their jurisdictions and shortage of sources should not hamper the efforts.
The meeting took stock of the drive started in coordination with executive police against road violations and it was decided that the road users, especially the bikers would be made aware of dangerous results of road violations. It was told that during the ongoing drive various violators have been challaned and the bikers made to wear helmets for their own safety.
Mr. Rajendra stressed upon the officers to bring awareness among the road users through publicity in the print and electronic media about safety measures to be adopted. He said that the working of traffic police is being monitored at PHQ level and any laxity by any officer would be viewed seriously. He assured that PHQ would provide every support including additional manpower and equipment to make traffic management more efficient.
Among others, the meeting was attended by IGP (Kashmir Zone), SJM Gillani, DIG Traffic Kashmir, Alok Kumar, SSP Traffic Rural, Shalinder Kumar Mishra, SSP Traffic, Maqsood-ul-Zaman and other police officers.
