Rain creates havoc, 6 die in landslides, house collapse

JAMMU, Aug 1: At least six persons were killed in land slides, house collapse and flash floods as the heavy rain created havoc in the region since last evening.
The traffic was disrupted on several roads for some time in the region as flash flood in various nallahs and land slides put the normal life out of gear.  The traffic on busy Samba-Mansar- Udhampur-Srinagar road came to grind halt after land slides hit the road at Papar Morh near Nud last mid night. The traffic on the road could be restored only around 10.30 am today.
Massive flood was witnessed in river Chenab, Tawi, Basantar and Ujh besides other nallahs. The rain water entered into many localities in Jammu city including some slums and caused damage to public property.
Two minor girls (both sisters), namely Anchal Devi (9) and Prachi Devi (6), daughters of Sudesh Kumar were washed away due to flash flood in a nallah at village Padanoo, about 13 kms from Udhampur. The incident took place when these girls were grazing cattle at the bank of nallah and playing. Unaware of the flash flood due to heavy rain in upper reaches, both were washed away.
A report from Reasi said that  28-year old Shamas Din, son of Abdullah and Abdul Qayoom (22), son of Abdul Majid, residents of Balmatkote were buried alive under the debris during land-slide last night.  The mishap took place when they were returning home from the nearby village. Their bodies could be retrieved by the villagers today.
In another similar incident one Bashir Ahmed- a Government teacher, son of Ghulam Mohd, resident of Karam Katha village was buried alive and his minor son Masoom and wife Muneera received injuries during land slides due to heavy rains in Dharmari area of Arnas this morning. His body could be recovered this afternoon. Muneera got fainted and fell down due to shock and helped by locals was shifted to hospital at Dharmari.
A report from Rajouri said that 10-year old boy was killed after a ‘Kutcha’ house collapsed at village Khor Balli in Kalakote area last night during heavy rain. Two other members of the family sustained injuries in the collapse. The deceased has been identified as Mohd Rafi, son of Chandiya, resident of Khor Balli village.
Meanwhile, traffic remained disrupted for several hours on Ghagwal-Rajpura border road in the morning due to flash flood in Babbar Nallah after heavy rain. The school going children and employees had to wait for hours together till the water level receded. The construction work on the bridge at the site was initiated about a decade back but it could not be completed till today. The people from nearby 10 villages of this border belt are facing hardships due to flood in the nallah during rainy days. Reports from other areas also revealed that traffic was disrupted on national highway, Dayala Chak- Billawar  and other link routes due to flood in various ‘nallahs’ today.
