All the railway stations in Valley including in volatile south Kashmir remained deserted. The ticket counters are closed and railway line is untouched.
As per Railway officials, 15 pairs of train run regularly over 137-kilometer-long railway line from Banihal to Baramulla. These trains carry nearly 30,000 commuters including students and Government employees but the ongoing unrest has crippled the train services.
The train services on 137-kilometers long rail line is suspended since July 9 after widespread protests and violence raged across Kashmir in the wake of killing of militant commander Burhan Wani. During the unrest, the mobs attacked rail installations at several places in South Kashmir including Panjgam, Malangpora, Pampore and Hillar.
The protesters at Kakapora attempted twice to set ablaze the local station but the paramilitary personnel deployed there foiled the attempts by using force against them. “On an average, we have Rs 3 lakh earning daily. That means we have suffered Rs. 363 crore losses,” an official said. However, he said, the losses suffered due to crowd attacks are still being ascertained.
