Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti celebration held at CUJ

JAMMU, May 10: Commemorating the Writer Series, the Department of English, Central University of Jammu celebrated Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti in the University Campus, Rahya Suchani here today.
Prof Govind Singh, Dean, School of Languages presided over the function.
In the opening remarks, Dr Vandana Sharma, Head, Department of English termed Tagore as timeless poet, dramatist, humanist and seer.
She also highlighted the objectives of initiating ‘Commemorating the Writer Series’ wherein the department will celebrate birthday of a legendary writer every month and in the process will make the students learn what goes into the making of a great writer so that they develop an understanding of a writer’ life, his/ her literary output, philosophy,  and above all thematic concerns in his/her oeuvre.
In the presidential remarks, Prof Govind Singh dwelt over various facets of Gurudev with illustrations from his vast firsthand experience of being at Shantiniketan for many years.
Prof. Singh also shed light on Tagore’s equally remarkable focus of children literature, known as ‘Sahaj path’ which is still a foundational text for tiny tots in Bengal.
Prof Ghulam Mustafa Khwaja also graced the occasion.
The programme began with invocation by Rabindra sangeet followed by projection of a documentary on the life of Gurudev by Dr Jeet Singh.
Dr Neena Gupta spoke on brief introduction to Chitrangada with a viewing of the dance drama.
Scholars from various departments of the University who recited poems of the great poet were-Shashak Manish, Research Scholar, Department of NSS; Mangesh, Research Scholar  Department of Hindi and Shashank Kulkarni, Research Scholar Department of  PPPA.
Ghulam, research scholar, Department of English made a presentation on ‘Tagore’s Idea of Nationalism’, while the Indian Nation and its Out Casts-with special reference to Tagore’s Gora was presented by Tanishika Bhagat.
The programme ended with a vote of thanks by Dr Farooq.
