In an exclusive interview to EXCELSIOR, Vinod Sawhney, a resident of Bakshi Nagar in Jammu, said “hundreds of Indian prisoners are languishing in Pakistan jails and have been living in miserable condition. They are generally tortured physically as well as mentally by Pakistan Army officials everyday”.
Praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi for creating such a pressure on Pakistan which led to release of Air Force Wing Commander Abhinandan within 48 hours from the captivity of Pakistan, Sawhney said, “it is really praiseworthy but we should not stop here and pressure has to be made on Pakistan in order to secure release of all Indian prisoners including 56 prisoners of 1971 Indo-Pakistan war”.
Sawhney, who was released by Pakistan in 1988 along with 109 other Indian prisoners, in lieu of 300 Pakistan prisoners released by India, while recalling his life in Pakistan jails, said that the jails of Pakistan are not less than hell. “Pakistan jails are like graveyard for living people,” he further said, adding he knew very well how Indian prisoners are tortured there physically as well as mentally by the Pakistan army and jail officials, as he had spent 11 valuable years of his life there.
He said Pakistan Army is very cruel and unprofessional and it is not hidden to anyone as everyone has seen what they did with Indian prisoners Chamel Singh and Sarabjeet in the past. “Our 56 Army personnel from the rank of Soldier to Colonel are languishing in various Pakistan jails since 1971 Indo-Pakistan war and it is difficult to explain in words how they are tortured there,” he added.
Sawhney, who heads Jammu Ex-Sleuths’ Association, said it is a golden opportunity for India to get release all Indian prisoners from Pakistan as there is a lot of international pressure on Pakistan at present due to the persistent efforts made by India.
