JAMMU, Aug 26: A massive demonstration of all Public Sector Bank employees was held at Shalimar Chowk here today under the banner of Jammu Province Bank Employees Federation (JPBEF).
The demonstrators were protesting against the proposed mergers in the banking industry and it observed the day as Anti Merger Day in the banking Industry.
Comrade Arun Kumar Gupta, general secretary of the Federation while addressing the protestors apprised them of the decisions of AIBEA’s recently held General Council meeting at Kolkatta whereby AIBEA called upon all the bank employees and officers for intensifying actions and struggle programme under AIBEA/AIBOA against the ill conceived merger plans of the Government in the banking industry.
He reminded the gathering, the budget speech of the Finance Minister wherein he dropped hints about Government’s thinking on the proposed mergers in the banks. There are also statements from Ministry officials that reveal government’s thinking on this score, Gupta added.
He said the employees view point which holds that the mergers and consolidation of banks are not at all warranted in a country like India where more than 50 crore of people still do not have even a bank account, expanding the banks to reach all of them is the main task. In a country like India people’s interests shall be better served by expanding the sector rather than consolidating it, he added.
Gupta said Public Sector Banks can alone be the vanguard in the national task.
Comrade Ashwani Pradhan from AIBOA informed the Bank men of the increasing instances of pressures and harassment the bank managers, officers and employees are being put to in the name of business targets etc. The demonstrators raised slogans against the merger of banks.
