Srinagar, June 29: Even after spending a huge amount on its construction, a public convenience situated at the Bab-ul-Sultan gate of Makhdoom sahib’s shrine in Tujgari Mohalla is lying in a dilapidated condition for the last several years now.
The public convenience was constructed several years back and was meant to be managed by the SMC, however, the locals said that for the last nearly 4 years, it is in a dilapidated condition even as the concerned authorities are not paying any attention to it.
They said that the walls of the toilet are damaged while the doors are also broken, leaving it unfit for use.
“For the last 4 years, it has been lying in this condition; it is cleaned after years while the concerned ward officer has been indifferent as he has not taken any note of it so far,” said Aijaz Ahmad Bhat, a local.
He said that the taps have also been stolen while several other essentials are also missing. “It is our money but nobody is here to take care of it.”
The locals said that those who reach here to visit the shrine used to do ablution at the public convenience, “but over time that facility is gone because it has been rendered useless.”
Another local, Tariq Ahmad Bhat said that nearly Rs 16 lakh rupees were spent to construct the public convenience, which, he said, have turned out to be a waste.
“We have been informing the authorities about it, but they are not bothered. It used to be of great use for the people reaching here from several areas, but now it is not even suitable for use,” he said.
“The ward officer is missing from the scene; but keeping in view the importance of the public convenience, the SMC should take note of it, the Mayor needs to look into the matter and take necessary measures,” the locals said.
