Provide justice to Punjabi language: Sikh bodies

JAMMU, Sept 9: In a joint meeting of Management Committee, Gurudwara Baba Chanda Singh Ji, Jain Bazar, Nirvair Social organization, Gurudwara Charan Kamal Asthan Guru Nanak Dev Ji Ser Manjila, Desh Bhagat Yaadgar Committee, Virasat-e-Khalsa, has expressed its serious concern over non- inclusion of Punjabi language in the official languages of Union Territory J&K.
These Sikh bodies said that Government has excluded Punjabi from official languages in J&K. They also condemned the step motherly treatment meted out to Punjabi speaking people. They said that the ancient sofis and saints scripts are in Punjabi while sacred Guru Granth Sahab is also in Punjabi. Even the scripts of various Bhagats are noted down in Punjabi although they do not belong to Sikh religion.
While speaking on the occasion Sukhbir Singh said that Punjabi is over 500 years old language but the justice has not been provided to the Punjabi. Further, the spirit of equality has not been ushered. He added that in the Northern parts of India also the mother tongue is Punjabi. Also the Punjabi language is most widely spoken and written language of the erstwhile State of J&K for the last two centuries. He appealed the Union Government to reconsider its decision and include Punjabi as one of the official languages in J&K.
Jagjot Singh Raina, Jagbir Singh, Jagjit Singh and others also spoke on the occasion.
