Protest at Sunderbani, people block highway

RAJOURI, Feb 22: The people from entire Sunderbani sub division today held strong protest demonstration  and blocked Jammu-Poonch highway, demanding creation of post of Additional Deputy Commissioner for Sunderbani.
The people including members of Beopar Mandal, SD Sabha and others irrespective of their party affiliation assembled in the main bazaar  and then took out a strong protest march. After passing through main market, they reached  the main chowk on Jammu-Poonch highway and then raised barricades at around 11 am.
They were carrying banners depicting their demand of creating  additional district at Sunderbani. Later, they sat on dharna on the road. The movement of vehicles on this busy highway came to halt. Even they did not allow Army vehicles to move on this border belt. Several local leaders including Beopar Mandal president Inder Pal Gupta addressed the gathering and criticised the Government for ignoring Sunderbani.
The speakers pointed out that Sunderbani deserves to be upgraded as it is more than 80 kms from Rajouri district headquarters. Moreover it has vast area. The people have to go to Rajouri for district level works there.
The police party reached there and tried to lift then dharna and clear the Road but after the intervention of Deputy Commissioner, Dharma was lifted at around 1.50 pm. The DC has assured  them that matter has been forwarded to the higher authorities for final decision on the issue.
Meanwhile, Joint Action Committee framed for the purpose in a meeting held at Sunderbani this evening decided to observed complete bandh in the town on Friday. All the political parties are supporting the cause.
