SRINAGAR, Apr 24: Prof. M. Ashraf Ganie, Director of Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, has been awarded the 2026 “Recognition of Academic Excellence (RAE)” by the National Academy of Medical Sciences for his pioneering research on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and its role in driving non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in India.
The award, under the Achanta Lakshmipathi RAE category in maternal and child health, women’s health and community nutrition, was presented in New Delhi during the 66th Foundation Day of NAMS by P. K. Mishra.
The honour recognises Prof. Ganie’s extensive work linking PCOS with increased risks of diabetes, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular diseases, and highlighting its intergenerational impact on offspring.
As National Chief Coordinator of the ICMR PCOS Task Force study, Prof. Ganie led a multi-centric research project across 18 centres that produced India’s first large-scale composite data on PCOS.
The findings, published in an international journal, indicate that maternal PCOS may predispose children to early onset of diseases such as type 2 diabetes, coronary artery disease, non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and hypertension.
During the event, Prof. Ganie delivered the Foundation Day oration titled “PCOS as a Central Driver of NCDs Epidemic in India,” presenting his findings before leading medical experts.
As per the details, the research also contributes to developing improved diagnostic benchmarks and risk prediction models tailored to Indian women, addressing gaps in clinical practice.
Apart from his role at SKIMS, Prof. Ganie heads the M.P.-PCOS Society and is working on integrating metabolic data to build a comprehensive national database linking research with clinical care.
