Private school owes Rs 2 cr to students

Srinagar, Dec 12: A private school which was charging students Rs. 300 every month for three years as Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) fee owes around Rs. 2 crore to parents and guardians of the students.
Minto Circle, an English medium school at Alouchi Bagh area, was wrongly charging Rs. 300 per student since 2013 as CBSE fee.
The Committee for fixation of fee structure of private educational institutions headed by Justice (retired) Hakeem Imtiyaz Hussain found that the management was doing wrongful gain to the school.
The Committee for fixation fee structure further in its notice directed the management of the Minto Circle School to return the sum so far collected from the students/their parents as CBSE charges. However, no amount whatsoever has been refunded so far and according to rough estimates the amount ranges upto Rs. 2 crore as around 2000 students are enrolled in the school.
The Committee order reads: “The School Management has in their response admitted that they are charging Rs 300 from each student as CBSE charges.”
The committee says that the charging of the CBSE fee without affiliation is a criminal act. “From the facts and circumstances of the case we find that the stand taken by the school is unreasonable one and cannot be justified… The act of the school besides being a criminal act is highly improper”, the committee order reads.
After wrongfully charging students, the school few days ago announced that it is now CBSE affiliated. On the other hand, the Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) has withdrawn its recognition and approval of the Managing Committee for Minto Circle School following its affiliation with Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) New Delhi.
