Primary Education in J&K

Er Sagheer Ahmed
In Jammu and Kashmir we have very far flung areas where the people are not able to teach their children properly. One instance can be seen in many villages/schools in District Rajouri of pir panjal region, surrounded by tall mountains. The condition of most of the Govt. schools is not good in terms of buildings, availability of teachers and most importantly quality education. If we see the quality of teachers in these Govt. schools it is extremely good. They are well qualified but, they do not take keen interest to teach their poor pupils. It has been observed that most of the teachers who teach in Govt. schools have put their own wards in well private schools. On the other hand, in Govt. schools all the children belong to poor families. These people have only Govt. schools as a source of education for their children.
From the last many years, Govt. has spent crores of rupees for improving education system in Govt. schools but, the matter has been as it is since many decades. There is no change seen in the system.
We observe that, every year the strength of students in Govt. schools has been declining. The main reason behind this is that the elite category of people is not interested to put their wards in Govt. schools. It is clear that, most of the Govt. teachers go to the schools only to get their salaries and to keep their jobs intact. They do not show responsibility towards the society and are not able to fulfill their duties for which they have been appointed.
If every individual will take the responsibility then only we can improve the basic primary education system in all the Govt. run schools across the Jammu and Kashmir. In comparison to private schools the Govt. schools have well educated and highly experienced teachers but, the private schools are far ahead and provide best and quality education.
In view of the above facts and circumstances few suggestions for improving basic primary education system in all the Govt. schools can be put down as follows:
* Firstly we have to improve the basic things such as regularity, punctuality, cleanliness etc. There should be a proper rule in every school to deal with such activities.
* Every teacher and student should be well dressed. The students should be in proper uniforms which make them look equal and smart.
* Morning Prayer is the most important assignment which should be undertaken in every school in grouping.
* Every house/group should comprise of one teacher and 3 to 4 students. It’s the duty of Principal/Headmaster to assign the jobs to each group/house in every day of week so that, proper discipline should be maintained.
* If there is any misconduct by any of the group/house it should be reported to Principal/Headmaster. Further it is the responsibility of Principal/Headmaster to improve that discipline with the aid of teachers.
* It’s the responsibility of every Principal/Headmaster to provide friendly environment to every teacher of respective schools. The senior teacher among the staff should act as Coordinator. All the routine work of every school such as time table, allotment of classes, conducting of exams etc. should be done through coordinator.
*It should be the responsibility of coordinator to make all the classes functional. If any problem arises he/she can report to Principal/Headmaster.
* As we all know that, education is tri polar system that includes Parents, teachers and students so it is the responsibility of every parent to provide all the basic facility to his/her children so that his/her study will not suffer.
* There should be more class work for children upto middle standards which should be checked properly at class level every day. It should be the responsibility of coordinator to have a surprise visit in every class on routine basis. If any short coming is detected it should be reported to Principal / Headmaster for further necessary action.
* There should be yearly/monthly education clander for every school. The calander should comprise of schedule of tests of every subject in every week/month. The marks obtained by students in tests should be reflected on single sheet which can be produced before the Principal/Headmaster.
* There should be Parent Teacher meet in every month in which the complete progress of every student should be placed in the meeting so that, parents of the respective students remain aware of the progress of his/her ward. Proper care should be given for weak, physically and mentally challenged children.
* As we know that, “a sound mind lies in a sound body” so, for the mental development of the students there should be proper co-curricular activities in every school. Every student should be encouraged to participate in games, events, major activities etc. so, that they can compete with the whole world.
* In this world of competition our children should be equipped with all the essential and basic educational facilities as: A) Proper seating arrangement B) Science and computer labs. C) Proper white board and marker system D) for high and Higher Secondary schools there should be atleast one projector so that, our children can enhance their knowledge.
