Sir,
Sachin Tendulkar, the legendery cricket player of India and Dr. C.N.R. Rao, serving as Chairman of Prime Minister’s Science Advisory Council, who have been awarded the highest Indian civilian award Bharat Ratna (Jewel of India) for their exceptional contribution in their respective fields really deserved this highly coveted prize.
While Tendulkar has set many new records in national and international cricket, for which he is revered as ‘God of Cricket’ across the globe Prof, CNR Rao has become the third Indian scientist, after legendery Nobel Laureate CV Raman and ‘the missile man of India’, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam to get this coveted award in the field of science. The fact that he has received honorary doctorates from as many as sixty universities worldwide , authored 1500 research papers and authored and edited forty five books speaks volume about the hard work he has done and the quality of his research work.He has also been the recipient of many national and international awards, which bears testimony to his scholarship and international recognition of his exceptional contribution in the field of solid state and structural chemistry and makes him one of the most decorated and awarded scientists of India. At the time of his nomination to his prestigious award,he had lamented the inadequate funding and delay in release of funds for carrying out research work and said that scientists contribute more for the funds they are provided.
The government and the institutions associated with conduct and promotion of research in India ought to take his outburts seriously and take steps to ensure that research projects are not fund starved as according to him teaching is as important as research.
The biographical accounts of both these great sons of Mother India need to be included in the syllabus of students at secondery and senior secondery level to enable them to have an insight into their life and achievements and thus inspire them at an early age to derive inspiration from these living legends and contribute their best and thus, make their nation feel proud of them.
Yours etc…
