President’s timely call

Sir,
President  Pranab  Mukherjee while speaking  at a function at Nehru Memeorial Museum has fulfilled his duty as head of the country to warn the nation to remain vigilant against communal and divisive forces which pose a big threat to the unity and integrity of the country and hence need to be fought with full force to safeguard its rich cultural heritage and civilizational values. Your paper has also endorsed the views of the president through its editorial ‘Civilizational Values’ (12th April) and done a commendable job by giving  your readers  food for thought to seriously ponder over this important issue and not remain a mute spectator but  take remedial measures at their level to check this worsening situation of growing intolerance, disharmony and divisiveness.
Politics when combined with religion is a dangerous combination and we find majority of the people following the rituals of the religion in which they are born being misled by those who wish to capture power by misuse of religion. Of late this trend is growing alarmingly and if not checked is a grave threat to the century old traditions of tolerance, peaceful co-existence and secular fabric of the country as enshrined in the constitution. We need to heed to the President’s timely warning and all responsible and peace-loving citizens who wish our rich cultural heritage of tolerance and harmony to survive will have to contribute by pledging not to be misled by vested interests who sow seeds of hatred and divisiveness for their personal agenda to gain power by raising emotional issues and  exploiting people in the name of religion, language or regionalism.
Yours etc….
