President Ram Nath Kovind confers sports awards

NEW DELHI: President Ram Nath Kovind today bestowed the prestigious sports awards- Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award and Arjuna Award at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on the occasion of National Sports Day, observed on the 112th birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand.

While former India’s hockey captain Sardar Singh and Paralympian javelin thrower Devendra Jhajharia received Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna awards, seventeen deserving athletes from various sports in India, were presented with Arjuna Awards.

The seventeen athletes from various sporting fields who received the coveted Arjuna Award are – Cheteshwar Pujara, Harmanpreet Kaur, Mariyappan Thangavelu, Varun Bhati, SSP Chawrasia, Saketh Myneni, Khusbir Kaur, Aarokiya Rajiv, Prashanti Singh, SV Sunil, Satyawrat Kadian, Anthony Amalraj, PN Prakash, Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Jasvir Singh, Devendro Singh and Bembem Devi.

Besides this, the prestigious Dronacharya award was conferred to Late Dr R Gandhi (Athletics), Heera Nand Kataria (Kabaddi), GSSV Prasad (Badminton-Lifetime), Brij Bhushan Mohanty (Boxing- Lifetime), P A Raphel (Hockey-Lifetime), Sanjoy Chakraverthy (Shooting-Lifetime), Roshan Lal (Wrestling-Lifetime).

While Bhupender Singh, Syed Shahid Hakim and Sumarai Tete were presented with the Dhyanchand awards, Nita Ambani was glorified with the Rashtriya Khel Protsahan Puruskar for Reliance Foundation Youth Sports.  (AGENCIES)
